Riddles in the Dark

A year and counting. Next December the movie that has been awaited for the past 10 years is finally going to be released. A two part film (it wouldn't be a Peter Jackson film if it wasn't absurdly long) that shows us the adventure that began all adventures - the Hobbit. Click below to view the trailer..

How amazing does that look?? It does seem like PJ has gone for a story-telling type film, where the older version of Bilbo Baggins (nice to see Ian Holme back in this role) sets the scene for a young Frodo. I like that, as it relates the LotR film to this by using familiar characters. And of course, no Tolkien based film would be complete without Ian Mckellen reprising his role as Gandalf (Grey or White).

I'm hoping this film will portray the funner side of Gandalf - the side which loves a good smoke and story and shows off his fireworks. There was an interesting scene in the trailer with Gandalf and Galadriel which is rather puzzling. I hope the film writers haven't done anything silly, such as setting up an affair between the two. It's more likely to be some sort of greeting of ring-bearers however. As we know, Galadriel holds the elven ring, Nenya 'mithril ring' and Gandalf holds the ring Narya 'ring of fire', which was given to him by Cirdan the shipwright.

The Hobbit is meant to be a children's book, which tells the tale about how some dwarves and a hobbit go on an adventure to steal some gold from a dragon, Smaug. Now, I'm very excited about the dragon. What will it look like?? His voice will be played by Benedict Cumberbatch (smashing name, never heard of him but nevertheless, SMASHING NAME!!!). I'm sure Smaug will be fantastic.

However, the Hobbit is an intricate tale which sets up the full LotR story. Starting with the trolls that Gandalf tricks into turning into stone, moving onto to discussions amongst elves, both with Elrond in Rivendell and Legolas and his kin in Mirkwood, to the most important part of all.

Riddles in the Dark

This is when Bilbo meets Gollum in a cave and he finds the ring. The most essential part of the story, and definitely a scene that I'm looking forward to. It will be creepy, scary and very very exciting.

So, those of you who are planning on watching this film a year from now (and I do hope it's all  of you), read the book and stay tuned to this blog, as I follow the events that lead us up to this brilliant new film.
