Last day in Melbourne + Early Morning Start

So Saturday was my last day with B&K in Melbourne before setting off for the conference in the Hunter Valley. We had a big day planned so after Brad took Tilda to her basketball game, Kate and I set off for the train station to catch the train into the town centre.

Because we had quite a few trains to catch that day we went over to the ticket operator and he convinced us we would save money by buying Myki cards. As you can see from the pictures, we did and were very pleased with them :D

The train into the city centre (Flinders Street Station to be exact) took about half an hour, and because it was such a nice day it was lovely to watch Melbourne go by out the window. But we eventually arrived and started walking through Melbourne, eyeing a few of the shops and really just watching the world go by.
Apparently this is a famous train station

Waiting for the tram
As we didn't have a lot of time, we eventually hopped on a tram (paying with our myki cards of course) towards the Docklands. However, because we both suck with directions, we ended up in the building area of the Docklands, which wasn't where we wanted to be. However, we managed to find our way onto a tourist circle tram in the end, which brought us right up to Waterfront City. This is quite a cool place, built in a bit like a city, but actually just consisting of small streets of shops (all of which were on sale) and some restaurants and fast food outlets. It's a very bright, modern place, but sadly doesn't seem to get as busy as it should because it's on the outskirts of the city.

Kate and I went into a couple of shops and bought a few pieces of clothing, which was fun. Now, if you've read the rest of my blogs you may recall that our last three meals consisted of pretty much nothing but cheese. Although they were fantastic, both of us were craving a bit of meat at this point. Which is why finding Nandos was such a blessing. Both of us got super tasty spicy chicken burgers for lunch, and they've never tasted better!!

Went to Nandos!!!

Program for Tilda's concert
We had to dash out of there pretty quickly after lunch, so that we could get to some suburb in the middle of nowhere to watch Tilda's piano recital. It took us a while to get there, but we made it a minute before it started, bang on time! The recital slash concert wasn't too long (thankfully as Tilda's was the only performance we were interested in seeing) but there were some rather painful moments. But the parents standing there with their video recorders (*cough* Brad) all really seemed to enjoy it. Tilda did a great job playing the piano whilst singing Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson, which I think is super impressive. Even when I played the piano I wouldn't have been able to do that. So well done Tilda!!

When the concert was over we decided to head towards Church/Chapel Streets in town. Tilda was being picked up by her mother and after that we browsed Topshop for a bit, then went to the pub for a drink. The weather was turning cold and a bit crappy at that point, so after we finished our pale ales - btw, these taste much better chilled - we headed back towards the car so we could drive to the restaurant.

Kate, Sarah and I had found this Southern bar/restaurant the last time we went to Bridge Street, and were pretty excited by the menu. So we headed back there and managed to snag the last table!! It's not a huge place so we were very lucky, because half an hour later you had no chance of getting anywhere to sit. But since we did, we quickly started scanning the pages and pages of cocktails in the menu and decided to get something called Bathtub Gin. This is based on the gin that used to be concocted in the States during Prohibition.

Bathtub gin served in cute little glasses

As you can see from the pictures, the bathtub gin came served in an actual bathtub and tasted fantastic. We had to be careful not to drink too much too quickly!! We also ordered some food, and I've included the pictures below because they're all foods I've never tried before and they were all fantastic!! We got pulled pork sandwiches as the starter, then Brad ordered jumbo prawns, Kate asked for blackened cajun-style chicken and I wanted the okra gumbo, with chicken. Needless to say they were all brilliant, especially when we added on the home-made hot sauce!! I think the fish was my favourite, but they were all super good. Also, I must say that one of the highlights of this place was the atmosphere - they had old movies playing on a big screen, it was dark and candlelit, and very busy!!

Chicken and Okra Gumbo
So after dinner and the tub we thought we'd better go home, because my flight was super early the next morning and Brad couldn't really drink as he was driving. So we set off and got home around 9.30. Brad had reminded me to double check my flight time which I was pretty sure was 6.10am. I checked, and I was correct, just not correct about the airport I was meant to be flying out from!!! Turns out the university had booked me to fly from Geelong Airport, which isn't even in Melbourne!! I wish someone could have captured the look on my face.

The result of this sad twist in the tale? We had a glass of wine, watched some Aussie Rules and marched off to bed, because Brad and I had to be up at 3am to drop me off in Geelong. Sorry about that Brad, but thanks for getting me to the airport on time!! :D
